Get to know our Board of Directors

Vincent Lacroix, President

Vincent is a retired Inco maintenance employee with 30 years of service. He graduated from the electrical apprenticeship program as a 1st class electrician and was promoted to supervisor for the last 10 years of his employment. After retirement, Vincent was elected as a Councillor for the Municipality of French River serving three consecutive terms of office. After 15 years of public service, Vincent and his wife Colette decided to move to the City of Greater Sudbury. Vincent is a Board member with the Sudbury/Manitoulin Children’s Aid Society as well as a Board member at Cooperative Funeral Home in Sudbury, Chelmsford and Hanmer. Vincent joined OCOF/Nena’s Board of Directors in June 2015, appointed to Finance and Fundraising committees.

Marlo Desjardins, Director

Marlo joined the OCOF/Nena Board of Directors in June 2019, bringing with her over 15 years of Human Resources experience within the public sector. She is the Human Resources Manager for the Espanola Regional Hospital and Health Centre and is an active member of the community. As a parent, Marlo has been involved with many OCOF/Nena programs and both her children attend our child care centre on a full-time basis. Marlo is a graduate of Laurentian University with a B.A. in Sociology and is currently involved in continuing education with York University. Marlo is a member of the Finance committee.

Alex McCauley, Director

Alex is a lifelong resident of the Greater City of Sudbury. Alex spent 33 years with the Greater Sudbury Police Service serving as Chief of Police for the last 8 years, retiring from policing in 2002. He went on to serve the Provincial Government as a Board member for the Alcohol and Gaming Commission and as an adjudicator with the Licence Appeal Tribunal. Alex has served on many Boards and associations locally and provincially. Most recently having served 2 years as Chair of the Board for the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario. Alex and his wife Pirkko proudly raised two daughters and enjoy their five grandchildren.

Marianne Schwendener, Director

Marianne was raised in Sudbury. After receiving a B.Sc. in Physics from Laurentian University, she chose to make her home in the Municipality of French River. She has worked with businesses and individuals in her region as a bookkeeper and tax preparer for the past ten years while raising her two children. An active community participant and advocate, Marianne volunteers with a variety of youth and community groups, participated gratefully in OCOF/Nena programming with her children in their early years, and partnered her non-profit organization with OCOF/Nena and the local Municipality to build the French River Community Splash Pad in 2016. Marianne joined the OCOF/Nena Board of Directors as its rural representative in 2018 and also sits on the Finance Committee.

Claire Valtins, Director

Claire joined the OCOF Board of Directors in June 2016, bringing 25 years of experience in the children’s service sector in the areas of health, mental health and education. For more than 15 years, Claire has maintained a management position working with Northeast Mental Health Centre as Program Manager with Integrated Services for Northern Children, Child and Family Centre as Program Manager for various children’s mental health programs and currently with Health Sciences North as Supervisor with the Infant and Child Development Services including Children’s Treatment Centre, rural Service Manager. Claire is an active participant at the community children’s tables and contributes in community wide cross sector planning for children and families across the District of Sudbury/Manitoulin. Claire is a graduate of Laurentian University with a BA in Psychology and is an OACCPP (cand).

Calvin Makela, Director

Calvin is a lifelong resident of Sudbury. He is a graduate of Laurentian University and Lakehead University. He has been a classroom teacher with the Rainbow District School Board since 2006. The majority of his teaching career has been in kindergarten and primary grades. Prior to this, he taught kindergarten in a fly-in First Nations community in Northern Ontario. Calvin is passionate about early learning and the importance of a strong learning foundation. He has volunteered with many organizations within the community and has a particular interest in equity, social justice and mental health.

Steve St. Denis, Treasurer

Steve is a graduate of Laurentian University Honours Bachelor of Commerce Program and is a Certified Professional Accountant. Steve is currently employed with Health Sciences North Sudbury. Steve has been a member of the OCOF/Nena Board of Directors since 2013 and brings his financial expertise to the Board as chair of the Finance committee.

Tina Leduc, Vice-President

Tina is a Staff Scientist for Science North in the Education Department. Tina has always lived in Sudbury and has been raising her young family in her native community. As a mother of two, both her children attend our child care centre. Tina has also participated in many of the programs and events offered by OCOF/Nena. Tina has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2017 and sit on the Finance committee.

Kathy Longarini, Director

Kathy was the Community Outreach Coordinator for Rainbow Schools, acting as liaison with the City of Greater Sudbury and Manitoulin- Sudbury District Service Board  – Children’s Services/Early Learning Sector and their networks for children and families for 12 years.  Kathy had the experience of collaborating with OCOF/Nena time and time again to assist in supporting the many needs of children and families in some of the most vulnerable circumstances across the district of Sudbury, Espanola and Sudbury East.  OCOF/Nena’s vision and dedication demonstrated the value and rewarding benefits to the individuals they served.  This inspired Kathy to become a supportive part to this organization as a member of the Board of Directors in June 2020.

Join our Board of Directors

Composition of the Board

The Board of Directors shall consist of minimum of seven (7) Directors to a maximum of eleven (11) Directors who must reflect the geographic, cultural, ethnic and linguistic characteristics of northern Ontario. Guidelines for the selection of Directors specify the range of professional skill, expertise and personal attributes required to make informed governance decisions.

Roles and responsibilities

Applicants will demonstrate an understanding of the roles, responsibilities and commitment this appointment will entail. Applicants will also demonstrate a commitment to dedicate the time required to attend Board meetings, participate on committees when required and attend annual events such as the Strategic Plenary and Annual General Meeting.

An understanding of the role of governance, the knowledge to participate in informed and critical discussions about policy issues and the ability to offer expertise in specific areas. Effective communication skills and the absence of a real or perceived conflict of interest.
